2. SPEAKING IN TONGUES

The Holy Spirit has already entered you at the moment of rebirth. Speaking in tongues is the result of the influence of the Holy Spirit in your spirit, soul and body. When the Holy Spirit takes over the speech center of your soul, a "gift of tongues" can be activated in your spirit and soul. You will be able to speak "speak secrets in the Spirit" with Jesus and the Father in the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

1 Cor 14:1-5: Pursue love, yet earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For the one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people, but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for edification, exhortation, and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but the one who prophesies edifies the church. Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but rather that you would prophesy; and greater is the one who prophesies than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edification.

Although speaking in tongues is not the ultimate goal of spiritual life, it is an important element in reaching the full measure of the blessings of Jesus. Through it, the Holy Spirit builds and strengthens your spirit and the other gifts of the Spirit can be activated in you. When speaking in tongues, "spiritual awareness" is built into you. The essence of your spirit separates from your soul. Your inner witness about your position, ministry and anointing with the Father will be greatly established.

Speaking in tongues is primarily for your own spiritual growth. But it is also important to speak in tongues publicly in the congregation, where the interpretation of tongues can also happen. Through speaking in tongues, you acknowledge the authority of Jesus over the powers of your soul, by your spirit. Speaking in tongues will open a whole new realm of spiritual life for you. This is the first step in receiving other supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, pursue and exercise this gift diligently.

1 Cor 14:12-15: So, you too, since you are eager to possess spiritual gifts, strive to excel for the edification of the church. Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue is to pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive. What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit, but I will sing with the mind also.

When you speak in tongues, you allow the Holy Spirit to take over and to inspire the speech center in your brain. Then you receive the inspiration to speak from the Holy Spirit instead of your natural reason. You surrender your speaking under the influence of the Holy Spirit. This is a step of faith for you because your mind does not understand what is happening. You will discern the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in your spirit. Then you just connect your speaking with that inspiration. The Holy Spirit gives inspiration, but it is up to you to speak and use your voice.

You can start speaking in tongues anywhere through filling with the Holy Spirit. But it is easiest in an atmosphere of praise and worship where you can hear other people speaking with tongues. You can start speaking in tongues in your own quiet moment without anyone praying for you. Just let your mind rest in Jesus. When you feel the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, you just surrender to the flow and the Holy Spirit begins to flow into you and through you with new tongues.

Speaking in tongues is a step of faith and jumping into an unknown stream of the Holy Spirit. In faith you open your mouth to speak "something". You let the Holy Spirit inspire what you speak. Once you learn how to connect with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, it is easy for you to strengthen this gift through practice. Do not try to analyze what you speak, for you may speak in unknown human tongues or in the tongues of angels.

The Holy Spirit does not force a voice from you or force your lips to move. You use your voice freely and of your own free will. It is often good to speak in faith so fast that your reason cannot follow. Then your spirit will take over your soul. The questions, unbelief and disturbances of your soul will be silenced.

1 Cor 14:1-4: Pursue love, yet earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

Speaking in tongues is the foundation of all other gifts of the Spirit. Through speaking in tongues, the Holy Spirit strengthens your spirit and downloads the power and plans of Jesus into you. God's love touches your spirit and strengthens it. The more you speak in tongues, the more your spirit is empowered to lead your life. The resistance of the soul will be broken and all other gifts of the Holy Spirit will be released to flow through you.
